In our family it's been things like being permitted to walk out to the car by yourself, or playing in the front yard without direct parental supervision. In our neighborhood, these rites of passage include being permitted to play in the creek and being permitted to walk to downtown College Park by oneself.
The opportunity for my girls to walk to downtown College Park is many many years away, but they achieved the former recently.
They were allowed to walk down the banks of our creek to get closer to the water. The next step will be being allowed to actually go in the creek, but we didn't have the proper shoes on on this day.
They were so happy.
