Once you go toothpick...

They say that once you start cleaning with a toothpick it's hard to ever go back again. Once a certain someone put an idea in my head about toothpick cleaning, it's hard not to notice things that need to be attended to toothpick style.

We keep a pretty clean kitchen. I don't mop the floor, but David and I are both fairly clean in the kitchen, very rarely go to bed with dirty dishes on the counter or in the sink, and we wipe down the counters regularly with a vinegar/water solution.

On the other hand, my kitchen, in general, is kind of ugly and it is hard core mid-sixties. But those cabinets work well, and that tiny ugly stove is dime on time with it's temperature. But as is often true with old houses and kitchens, there's lots of places for little gunkie stuff to hide. We have this metal banding strip that goes around our counters (and is in perfect condition) and gunk loves to hide there.

So, while wiping down the counters a couple weeks ago, I noticed some gunky stuff up next to the metal strip.

I scraped at it with a dry toothpick. Isn't that so gross? Looks like animal droppings.

And then wiped it clean with a damp vinegar/water paper towel.

Over the next few days I attacked the entirety of my kitchen counter with a toothpick.

I may have a to-do list a mile long, I haven't been to the gym in 2 weeks, and Netflix probably wonders why I pay them $14 every month when I've had the same DVDs for over 6 weeks now. But at least my kitchen counters are de-gunkified.

I am cursing you! I have those same counters (GOD I HATE THEM) and I have never been compelled to clean the edge with a toothpick. But after seeing that... ew... here I go.

I imagine there's something very satisfying about using a very small tool to do a very big job. Good for you!

Toothbrushes often work well too, but possibly not as satisfying as a pointy little toothpick.

Yeah, that's exactly why you'll never see me cleaning with a toothpick. :)
