Pissing Match

I'm engaged in a pissing contest with an 18 month old. Becoming, no?

On the way home from the fabulous open gymnastics class at Fairland, I could see Ruthie was about to fall asleep. I employed my usual "stay awake" method, which is to roll down the back windows at a stoplight. Esther loves it and begs for me to leave them down while driving! I thought I had successfully awakened her sufficiently that she would stay awake the rest of the way home, but I was wrong. At the next stoplight, I looked back and her eyes were closed. I sounded the alarm "Esther, Esther, she fell asleep, she fell asleep!!!" Esther knows to start touching her hand and I rolled down the windows. She awakened but the damage was done.

For the past hour and a half I've gone into her room every 20 minutes or so and done a shortened version of our settling down for nap routine. I know she is exhausted and as soon as the cortisol that woke her up initially is out of her bloodstream she will fall asleep.

Update:
I think she might be asleep now, which means that I won the pissing match.

Congratulations. The DirectTV installer was here yesterday which was way too exciting to sleep through. Poor me. I lost. But at least he hung out in my bed long enough for me to catch a short nap.
