A tiny little something

I had a tiny little something today... a tiny little INTERVIEW that is. For a part-time job. For a non-profit agency with a hugely worthwhile mission. With offices located within one mile of my house. That will let me set my own hours (which will be 3 days per week 10am-4pm). And that will pay me enough to break even for the full amount of Ramona and Beezus' childcare.

I always knew that a pt job for me would come about this way, rather than through some conventional means. This came about because the agency is a new non-profit and a friend of mine is the director. And somehow, even though we've never worked together professionally, she is willing to consider me for this job.

The only downside is that it's largely administrative work that doesn't quite take advantage of my master's degree or 13 years experience. But frankly, I kind of don't care as long as the issues are meaningful and I'm getting something accomplished by the end of the day. Once upon a time I cared that other people perceive my job as "important", but my priorities are different now.

One of my favorite times of the day is putting the girls down for a nap. Beezus goes down first and I read two books to her while Ramona putters around her room. When it's time for her 2 songs, she sits in my lap. After a few seconds, Ramona waddles over and starts whining and pushing her. Beezus obligingly scoots over to one knee and Ramona continues pushing and whining while settling on to the other knee. And then... then, they sort of lean into each other and into me while I finish up the second song. We do this five times a week, every Monday through Friday. I'm going to miss doing this only twice a week.

I'm trying to balance short-term and long-term and I already passed up a job prospect back in January that had too many unknowns attached to it. It was a new position as well, and there was some uncertainty about whether the hours would be majority day or evening. I know the woman who ultimately took the job and it's worked out in such a way that would have been ideal for me.

So, we'll see...
